I like to think that most of the time I’m pretty cool. I know I’m not, but I hold out the vain hope that somewhere buried underneath all the layers of dorkasaurus, I’m this is infinitely cool being. Certain days though, that belief goes out the window. Because despite my ability to dress boho chic and rattle off an endless number of Cake song lyrics does not compare to the amount that I love scifi TV shows. I suppose I should blame it on my mother. When you grow up in a family where Star Trek: The Next Generation is a prominent amount of the tv-watching and by 12 you know every iteration of Star Trek…and their major characters. Yeah, I’m that girl. A lot my interest waned in late high school and the beginning of college. I didn’t have easy access to a TV for my first two years of school so I didn’t really watch TV all that much. But when I moved to Washington, DC to do a journalism program of my junior year a very good friend of mine got me interested in the new Scifi remake of the classic cheesy scifi show, Battlestar Galactica. I fell head over heels for this show. It’s really one of the most amazing shows on television today and a tour de force commentary on modern society.  From there, it only blossomed. And then a few months ago I was flipping through channels  on New Year’s Eve day and I stumbled upon a Stargate Atlantis marathon. One episode and I was hooked. It took me about a month and a half to get through up to the current episode (I’m writing this post during the commercials of the finale of Season 4).  At the moment I’m working my way through ten seasons of Stargate SG1, which I like, but not nearly as much as Stargate Atlantis. There’s a wonderful comedy to the show that has nothing to do with the drama. The characters are genuinely funny and at times even slapstick. I love it. I can’t get enough. The fact that they’re shooting Season 5 at the moment makes me overjoyed.  I’ve come to terms over the years with the fact that most other people aren’t going to like the kind of shows that I do. I have a small group of friends that I’ve made over the years that share this passion with me, the kind that have watched the entire season of Firefly. These are my people.  I’m not going to stop trying to be cool. And I’m definitely not a nerd. I dress better than most of the people I went to high school with (thanks to a generous douse of style of my roommate). I’m boho chic…I just also happen to love scifi.
